With so many foods and drinks out there that are said to be “super foods” or “ultra healthy”, it can be hard to keep up. While we posted recently about the different oils and their health benefits and risks, today we are posting about the wide range of vinegars out there.

Apple cider vinegar

This is one that has a laundry list of health benefits to it. Known to be anti-glycemic, it slows down or stops the breakdown of certain carbs, which prevents blood sugar spikes and can even support weight loss efforts.

It is also known to help ward off symptoms of seasonal allergies, improve immunity, clear your skin, and help balance your body’s internal pH level. The most beneficial version of this vinegar is the unfiltered one, appearing to be a little bit cloudy in color.

This cloudiness comes from its richness in probiotics and a multitude of other good bacterial that helps keep you healthy overall.


Rice vinegar

This is a less common vinegar, but it is healthy nonetheless! It serves as a terrific way to add flavor to meals, as it has no sodium or calories, making it a healthy option.

It also has phenolic compounds in it, which researchers believe may help protect the body from cancer and harmful free-radicals. Rice vinegar makes for a great marinade or substitute for traditional and more fattening salad dressings.

Coconut vinegar

This is a newer vinegar to the scene that packs some serious punch when it comes to health benefits. Like apple cider vinegar, this liquid is low on the glycemic index.

It is also rich in nutrients and vitamins, containing phosphorus, high levels of potassium, iron, magnesium, sulfur, boron, zinc, manganese, and copper.

Finally, i contains nine amino acids, which are key to building protein. The best coconut vinegars are those made with sap rather than coconut water.


Red wine vinegar

This is an extremely common household vinegar that has some great health benefits! Red wine vinegar contains antioxidants that have anti-aging properties, which is a huge plus.

It also contains resveratol, which studies show can have positive effects on Alzheimer’s, type-2 diabetes, and heart disease. Red wine vinegar has virtually no calories and is big on flavor, making it the perfect choice as a salad dressing or marinade.

While the large array of vinegars on the shelf can make it tough to understand which are the best for you healthwise, hopefully this list helped narrow it down by showing you the facts.

While most vinegars are good for you and low in calories, carbs, and sugars – one vinegar that is not as healthy to note is malt vinegar as it contains sugar.

These make great replacements for other condiments you may use in meals that are higher in calories. Vinegar allows you to minimize calories without sacrificing flavors – what could be better than that?!
