Less meat intake can reduce your chance of heart disease or stroke

Meatless Monday’s website notes that eating less meat can reduce your risk of heart disease or stroke.

The site states that each serving of fruits or vegetables consumed is associated with a 4% decline in coronary heart disease and a 5% lower risk of stroke.

Additionally, studies show that a diet of 2.5 or more servings of whole grains a day resulted in a 21% lower risk of cardiovascular disease.

Diets filled with a higher intake of fruits and vegetables is shown to contribute to a longer life expectancy, as it cuts down on the chances of diseases such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

It saves you money

Foods such as fruits, vegetables, and grains are typically less expensive than purchasing meat. The higher price accounts for the cost of feed and transportation for the food.

Going meatless one day a week is a good way to balance your budget.

Disadvantages of Meatless Mondays

It could reduce your energy levels

If you do not know the right foods to eat minus the meat, you could end up feeling less energized if you do not eat meat on this day of the week.

That is because meat is rich in protein which gives us energy throughout the day.

You could be missing out on vitamins

Meat does, in fact, contain many vitamins and not consuming any for the day could mean you miss out on those.

For instance, beef has many vitamins, including zinc, iron, protein and B vitamins, and half of the fat found in beef is monounsaturated, containing the same heart-healthy fats found in olive oil.

It could be more difficult to prepare meat-free meals

When you are used to your meals centering around meat, it could be time consuming and difficult to come up with meal ideas that are healthy, nutrient-rich, and devoid of meat.

Now that you know the facts, you can make a decision of whether or not to encourage meatless Mondays at your office. While it could be a great movement, it’s also important to consider the drawbacks.
